In a book entitled The Best in Advertising Campaigns, published last year by RC Publications, Jockey International, Inc., outlined its anti-gay advertising policy:

"Don Cantin, agency account supervisor, indicates that the touchy subject of homosexuality loomed large in creative planning for this ad, 'The client is highly sensitive about conveying a homosexual image,' he states, and that is why heavily-muscled men were sketched in the spreads.'

Asked whether the 'big muscles' approach might not trigger the thought that the line

is directed at the gay market, Cantin declares that the strategy aimed at just the opposite response. 'The weightlifter types were chosen to convey the thought that everyone was wearing colored underwear,' he says. 'We felt that if you advertise color in underwear enough, it becomes acceptable just like the shift from white to colored shirts. Our approach here was based upon the premise that effective and constant promotion of color in underwear would wear away any stigma of homosexuality which might result'."
